The lost generation: spiritual and existential hangover from WW1; artists tried to find what was beautiful in the world after the war. earnest Hemingway
They turned the minds eye inward and attempted to record their thoughts as they happened.

They didn't believe in a higher being controlling all that happens on earth.

Unreliable narrator- thoughts of the mind as it happens.

Stream of consciousness- reflects authors attempt to capture what's happening inside our minds.
