9/28-9/30 homework

1)A DREAM WITHIN A DREAM

Take this kiss upon the brow!
And, in parting from you now,
Thus much let me avow-
You are not wrong, who deem
That my days have been a dream;
Yet if hope has flown away
In a night, or in a day,
In a vision, or in none,
Is it therefore the less gone?
All that we see or seem
Is but a dream within a dream.
I stand amid the roar
Of a surf-tormented shore,
And I hold within my hand
Grains of the golden sand-
How few! yet how they creep
Through my fingers to the deep,
While I weep- while I weep!
O God! can I not grasp
Them with a tighter clasp?
O God! can I not save
One from the pitiless wave?

Is all that we see or seem
But a dream within a dream?

2) when I was on the walk I shut my phone off so I wouldn't have any distractions. I looked around and tried to focus and realize why would Dr.Preston have us do this?? So I kept walking and walking until I found myself enjoying the silence and the comfort of walking around and being worry free. So I'm not sure what we were suppose to get out of it but I learned that walking calms me down.

Essay revision

The next time we write an essay I will do a quick prewrite to help organize my thoughts and try not to summarize the story but focus on getting my point across.

A Dream Within A Dream by Edgar Allen Poe

"Is all that we see or seem
But a dream within a dream?"

This part of the poem made me think and romanticism has you asking question to make us think.

I found an american literature book!

I googled american literature classics and I found the story The Red Badge Of Courage by Stephen Crane. I was interested because of this summary of the book. It just sounds awesome and worth reading!
Follow the trials and tribulations of Henry Fleming, a recruit in the American Civil War in this impressionistic novel by American writer Stephen Crane. Although Stephen Crane was born after the war and never participated in battle The Red Badge of Courage is one of the most influential war stories every written. The Red Badge of Courage treats with the meaning of courage as the young protagonist Henry Fleming is cast into circumstances that take the full measure of his. Another classic that deserves its place in the library of American Literature.

This life is your life

1)This commercial quotes the poem, The Laughing Heart by Charles Bukowski.

2) I thought that the use of the poem by the corporation is ironic because we usually take the corporations ideas and use them. This time it's the other way around.

3) The poem makes a whole lot of sense when you learn about his background. He was abused by his dad and felt like an outsider due to his severe acne that cause his face to be disfigured. His poem talks about getting out of the darkness and into the light. My interpretation of that is the dark being the period of time he was alone and abused and the light being now, the upside of his life.

4)http://m.imdb.com/name/nm0001977/bio is where I found answers 1 and 3.

5)your life is your life
don’t let it be clubbed into dank submission.
be on the watch.
there are ways out.
there is a light somewhere.
it may not be much light but
it beats the darkness.
be on the watch.
the gods will offer you chances.
know them.
take them.
you can’t beat death but
you can beat death in life, sometimes.
and the more often you learn to do it,
the more light there will be.
your life is your life.
know it while you have it.
you are marvelous
the gods wait to delight
in you.
