APPLIED MODERNISM: Essay

Fahrenheit 451 is a modernist novel because it has many elements of modernism in it; a distopian view of the future, focusing on inner-self and consciousness and lastly the idea of "sticking it to the man".

The whole story takes place in the "future" where books are considered a waste of time and are actually illegal to own. Books represent knowledge and freedom of expression through writing. This is absolutely a distopian view for the future.

The main character is Montag. Montag goes on a journey to find out why books are so bad for people to own and read. His inner-self changes dramatically throughout the story and we know this because the author writes in a way that allows us to tag along with Montag while he faces challenges and his view toward books changes.

The author "sticks it to the man!" By making one of the major themes: Don't be afraid to question authority to find out something for yourself. Questioning authority is a big part of modernism because the modernists didn't follow the romantic way of writing, they wanted to write their own way to express how they felt.

Modernism took place in (1900s-1965) post WWII when people questioned if the future would be a peaceful place or not. They focuses on the way the characters felt and not so much of what they just did.
Fahrenheit 451 displays all of these things traits and that's why it's a modern novel.

2/26 homework

I feel like the way we write today compared to 5 years ago is much different. When I think back to writing 5 years ago I think of neat, organized, and grammatically advanced essays. Today I feel like teachers don't stress on the traditional 5 paragraph format but encourage to write as much as the student thinks is enough. Another difference between now and then is why they were writing. They were probably writing for a good grade in class but today students write to express themselves and share there ideas.

MY MODERNIST

I chose Virginia Woolfe to study because of this quote.

"All I could do was to offer you an opinion upon one minor point—a woman must have money and a room of her own if she is to write fiction; and that, as you will see, leaves the great problem of the true nature of woman and the true nature of fiction unsolved."-Ch. 1

I feel like she is strong willed and believes in equality among men and women. She shares her beliefs through literature.

Can't wait to learn who this woman really was.

The First Seven Years

Summary of the ending pages we had for homework:
Feld speaks to Max when he goes in to get his shoes repaired. They talk about his daughter Mariam. Max agrees to call Mariam and ask her on a date. Later that day Sobel breaks his hammer by hitting it too hard and rushes out of the store. Feld gives Sobel a week off of work to cool off. After two dates with Max, Mariam says that he is boring and she does not wish to see him again. Feld becomes disappointed because he wants his daughter to have a good like with a man with a bright future. Feld goes to see Sobel to ask when he is coming back to work but Sobel replies "never". Feld soon finds out why Sobel is so angry. Sobel is in love with Mariam and was offended with Feld trying to set her up with someone else. Feld is shocked by this news and argues with Sobel telling him that "she will never marry a man so old and ugly as you". Sobel stands be the window weeping. Feld feels sorry for him and says once Mariam turns 21 years old he can "talk to her" (make his move). The next morning Feld is surprised to see that Sobel is back at the store working....waiting for his love.

ESSAY POSTGAME

Wasn't too proud of my essay today :(. I feel like I summarized the novel too much when writing essays on them. Next time I will try not to do that and figure out a way to incorporate literary terms and writing techniques to support my idea.

PARLOR POETRY

All of us experience change in our lives. Change is the one constant in our lives. There are changes that we look forward to and change that we fear. However, one thing is for sure. Things will not stay the same no matter how much we would like them too. When a life change occurs, we have two choices in how to respond. We can despair that a change has come and assume that things will be worse, or we can look with excitement at the new possibilities that the change presents.

I chose this poem because the people in Fahrenheit 451 were so use to doing the same thing everyday and were afraid of change. This poem says that you should embrace the changes in life.

THE TIME OF MY LIFE

I spent the rest of my class period working on my literary analysis for the book I'm reading. I just wanted to keep up with all the work in this class because once You fall behind it hard to catch up. Hopefully I can keep it going and work toward my goal of getting an A. But not just getting the A,but  being confident about knowing all that we have covered and understanding the hidden deeper meaning in every poem, short story, or novel we read.

LITERARY ANALYSIS: The Shack by William P Young

SUMMARY:This books starts off with depressed a man named Mack alone at home surrounded by ice and snow. We then enter the memories of Mack and find out why he is so sad. When he and his kids Missy, Kate and Josh went camping he took his eye off Missy for a couple seconds and when he turned back around she was gone. She was abducted and brutally murdered in a shack. Mack has blamed himself for her death and has lived with that guilt ever since. One day when he was alone at home he checked the mail and found that he had received a letter that said,
"Mackenzie,
It’s been a while. I’ve missed you.
I’ll be at the shack next weekend if you want to get together.
-Papa "
Mack was in complete shock and at first thought it was some cruel prank by the mailman. He called the mail office to find out that no mail has been sent to his side of town due to the weather conditions. "papa" is a name his wife uses to refer to god. Feeling all sorts of different emotions, Mack decides to go to the shack where his daughter was murdered. Once there Mack sees the large blood stain on the floor of the cabin. He collapsed right next to the blood stain and cried. Wondering why he had even gone there Mack decides to leave. As he is leaving he is comfronted by god, jesus, and sarayu. They help him understand what they all do for him and even in times of great sadness and pain he should always have faith. This experience changes Mack's way of thinking toward god and jesus. The story ends with Mack waking up in the hospital bein gtold that he was injured on his way to the cabin and never reached it there. Mack cant believe what he is being told and tells the officer all that had happended to him. The details he gives eventually lead to the discovery of other little girls that have been murdered and the man who murdered them.

THEME: you may not understand why god lets certain things happen but if you have faith in god everything will be okay.
